General information only. A checklist of the basics, not an audit of your site and not a guarantee of rankings. Google weighs hundreds of signals and the ones that matter most depend on your market. Use it to find the obvious gaps; a proper audit reads your Search Console data and your competitors’ pages.

The background
Most local sites fail the first group.
Before content or links matter, Google has to be able to read the site quickly and understand what each page is about. A slow site, duplicate pages and one page trying to rank for everything are the three problems I find most often, and none of them show up as a visible bug.
Questions
How do I know if my site is slow?
Open it on your phone on mobile data, not the office wifi, and count. Then check Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console, which reports what real visitors experienced. Anything marked poor is costing rankings.
Do I really need a page for every service and every city?
If you want to appear for “furnace repair Stoney Creek” you need a page that is about furnace repair in Stoney Creek. One page that mentions everything ranks for nothing in particular. Generate them from one content file so a large service area stays manageable.
How much does the Google Business Profile matter?
For a local business it is usually the biggest single lever: the map results get the call. Complete profile, correct categories, real photos and a steady flow of reviews. The Google Business Profile checklist on this site walks through it.
