Co-founded a hip-hop media brand, rebuilt it from zero after a suspension, and grew it from about 520K followers in 2018 to more than 1.1M across its accounts by 2026. Built the placement business that BROCKHAMPTON, a Dreamville and Interscope representative, Tory Lanez’s camp, Montgomery Digital and a Def Jam-connected team bought from, and the websites and apps around it.

How I got in

It started with a tweet. In January 2015 a friend tagged me under one of Ope’s tweets. By nineteen I was at Waterloo for computer science and Laurier for business, and Ope wanted an app built for DailyRapFacts. We built it. Then the Twitter account was suspended over copyright complaints and every follower and post was gone. Most people would have quit. We started again from zero.

The problem

Rebuilding an audience from nothing on a platform that had already shut us down once, with no budget and no team. The brand needed a distribution strategy that did not depend on one account, a website that could earn its own traffic, and eventually the original account back. That meant tracking down every complainant, negotiating and appealing until the suspension was lifted and the followers returned.

What I built

A content and distribution strategy across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, the @rapaccess feed built from zero in a single week in May 2018, and the website relaunched on WordPress and AWS with hired writers that August. Then a rate card: tweets, retweets and playlist placements that labels and agencies bought, with the best month, July 2022, bringing in about $8K. Alongside the brand I built the product ecosystem: the website, Rap Trivia, Rap Dictionary and RHYMEBOOK. All of it while working full time as an engineer.

The results

Followers across the brand’s accounts grew from about 520K in 2018 to 900K by 2021 and past 1.1M by 2026. The clients were real: BROCKHAMPTON signed in March 2021, a Dreamville and Interscope representative bought release bundles that May, Tory Lanez’s camp came back again and again from 2020 to 2022 after his rep bought ten tweets in May 2020, and Montgomery Digital bought placements for Lil Uzi Vert, Offset, NBA YoungBoy, Kevin Gates and Lil Durk. The same network launched Limelight: RapTV’s founder came in through these accounts, and one @rap post took the app past 10,000 users in a day. It proved that reaching millions of people does not take a big team or a funded budget; it takes someone who understands the audience and does not stop when things break.
